To be perfectly honest…

Where did this phrase come from, anyway? Why does anyone say it?

We’ve all heard that one shouldn’t start a sentence with “Honestly,…” because it implies you weren’t being honest, up to that point.

So, where did the saying originate? How did this even get into the lexicon? Did it truly come from a dishonest person who had a change of heart during some conversation in which they were involved?

Seriously…
