I happened upon The Lodger this weekend. I didn’t know much about them, but female percussionists are still relatively uncommon – and I’m drawn to them in a way similar to that of how Americans become very attentive when someone British is speaking.
The Lodger sounds, to me, very much like early Smiths (minus the Morrissey voice, of course). It’s really festive, driving Brit-pop with a rockabilly guitar sound layered on top. Ben Siddall is the driving force behind the band, and, it appears, that Katie James is no longer on drums – though the bands sound is pretty much the same.
My favorite song from them is “Kicking Sand,” from their May 2007 release, Grown-Ups.
They released Life Is Sweet, on CD, in May of this year, and it was a good continuation of the 2007 debut.
